However, in most applications, this model was applied as a one-to-one replacement for hydrology models without adapting or rethinking the experimental setup. The model performance dropped when the data from the Caravan dataset were used instead of the original data. We find that threshold processes in the runoff generation lead to such a relatively high occurrence probability of extremes. In this study, we design a way to predict, 5–6 months in advance, how severe the dry season will be in a rural watershed in northern California.
