Satellite gravimetry enables direct measurement of total water storage (TWS), a capability that was previously unattainable. In this study, we present an open-source land data assimilation system with global hydrological model, which temporally, vertically, and laterally dis-aggregates satellite-based TWS. This study provides a practical framework establishing operational water management with current and future satellite gravity missions.

Rivers are fed partly by rain and partly by water stored underground. Satellites can track this groundwater and help estimate river flow, but this was thought useful only for the largest rivers. We tested it with a rainfall-runoff model of three European rivers using groundwater data at different resolutions. River size barely mattered. What counted was how much of the flow comes from groundwater rather than rain. Detailed data help most where groundwater supplies much of a river's flow.

Snow droughts are periods with below-average snow accumulation and are becoming more frequent in a warming climate, yet their ecosystem and societal impacts remain poorly known. Using 13 years of data from 38 Italian catchments, we show that snow droughts reduced snow duration, increased winter melt-out events, and cut summer runoff by ~50 %. Photosynthesis increased by up to 10 % due to earlier meltout. These events also caused widespread water-supply reductions, especially in foothills.

The ESA SING project demonstrates how the future satellite gravity missions NGGM and MAGIC will improve observations of continental water storage, oceans, glaciers, sea level, earthquakes, and climate change. Their more accurate, higher-resolution gravity measurements will enhance Earth system monitoring, improve climate and hazard assessments, and strengthen operational services for water management, disaster preparedness, and environmental decision-making.

We evaluate the limitations of Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite data for estimating groundwater storage changes (ΔGWS) in a small, data-scarce coastal basin in Indonesia, where ocean signal leakage and spatial-scale mismatch present major challenges. On average, only 42% of ΔGWS estimates can be plausibly derived from GRACE, indicating that, without expanded in situ monitoring, ΔGWS estimates in this setting will remain uncertain.

This paper demonstrates the feasibility of using a Bayesian framework for estimating snow water equivalent (SWE) from InSAR phase data at C-, L-, and P-band wavelengths. The Bayesian approach shows promise as a value-added approach to estimating SWE from phase delay measurements that are not only accurate at the measurement times, but interpolate between measurements and extrapolate beyond measurements and provide distributional (uncertainty) estimates for SWE.

Even ground-based precipitation observations, often considered the most reliable, can introduce substantial uncertainty into snow modeling due to sparse gauge coverage at high elevations in mountainous catchments. This challenge motivates the present study, in which we propose a data assimilation framework that integrates satellite-based snow depth into a hydrological model to correct snowfall estimates over the Italian Alps, with implications for water management in data-scarce mountain regions.

The GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) and GRACE Follow-On satellites monitor changes in Earth's water storage by observing gravity variations. By integrating these observations into hydrological models through data assimilation, estimates of groundwater, soil moisture, and hydrological trends are improved, helping to monitor droughts, floods, and human water use. This review highlights recent advances in GRACE data assimilation, identifies key challenges, and discusses future directions with upcoming satellite missions.

Our study presents a method to estimate high-resolution snow water equivalent (HR-SWE) using low-resolution climate data (LR-CD). By using a data-driven approach, we analyze historical weather patterns from LR-CD to generate HR-SWE maps. Machine learning and statistical relationships between LR-CD and HR-SWE enable estimation for dates without HR-SWE data. This method enhances water resource management and climate impact assessments, especially in data-scarce regions.

Reliable snow water equivalent and snow depth estimates are key for water management in snow regions. To tackle computational challenges in data assimilation, we propose a Long Short-Term Memory neural network for operational use in snow hydrology. Once trained, it reduces computational cost by 70 percent compared to the Ensemble Kalman Filter, with a slight decrease in performances. This deep learning approach provides a scalable, efficient, and cost-effective modeling solution for hydrology.

We introduce China's first de-aliasing computation platform, incorporating China's Atmospheric Reanalysis and an in-house ocean circulation model. This platform produces CRA-LICOM, a high-frequency atmospheric and oceanic gravity de-aliasing product with a 6-hourly, 50 km resolution covering 2002–2024 globally. Assessing water availability and water use at the global scale is challenging but essential for a range of purposes. We describe the newest version of the global hydrological model WaterGAP, which has been used for numerous water resource assessments since 1996. We show the effects of new model features, as well as model evaluations, against water abstraction statistics and observed streamflow and water storage anomalies. The publicly available model output for several variants is described.

This study advances groundwater research using a high-resolution random forest model, revealing new recharge areas and spatial variability, mainly in humid regions. Limited data in rainy zones is a constraint for the model. Our findings underscore the promise of machine learning for large-scale groundwater modelling while further emphasizing the importance of data collection for robust results.

In this study, we benchmark the forecast skill of the NASA’s Goddard Earth Observing System subseasonal-to-seasonal (GEOS-S2S version 2) hydrometeorological forecasts in the High Mountain Asia (HMA) region. Hydrometeorological forecast skill is dependent on the forecast lead time, the memory of the variable within the physical system, and the validation dataset used. Overall, these results benchmark the GEOS-S2S system’s ability to forecast HMA hydrometeorology on the seasonal timescale.

Short summary
An improved method is used to integrate satellite-derived terrestrial water storage and surface soil moisture observations into a hydrological model within the Brahmaputra River basin (South Asia). This leads to a more realistic representation of the water stored in the land, allowing us to better understand its changes in space and time. The information the results provide is crucial in this basin due to its increasing water demand and vulnerability to extreme events because of climate change.
