Short summary
Wetland soils on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau contain layers that store and move water differently. Using soil measurements, evaporation experiments, and land surface simulations, we found that surface soils drained rapidly, while deeper soils released water more slowly and stored it longer. Representing these differences improved simulations of soil moisture and exchanges of water and heat with the atmosphere, helping land surface models better represent alpine wetlands.
